Deeply rooted in Chinese customs, Taoism is an ancient tradition of religious beliefs and philosophy. Originating over 200 years ago in China, it is a religion of opposites and unity; yin and yang. (BBC - Religions. 2014.) Taoism is all about the Tao, literally meaning "the way," to which all things are connect. Tao is the ultimate principle of the universe and is not a god but rather a force that impersonally guides things on their way. Self-development, being virtuous, achieving harmony with nature and the pursuit of spiritual immortality are all promoted by Taoism in an individual’s search for meaning. Taoist practice includes feng shui, meditation, reading and chanting of sacred texts, alchemy and fortune telling. Taoism used to be one of the strongest religions in China, however since the communist revolution it has been difficult to assess the popularity of Taoism in the world. The fundamental search for meaning intrinsic to the human condition is explored through the concept of Tao, the force encapsulating the connection of all beings and the universe.
